理由は・・・”ポリス”は1977年に結成されたバンドで、この「ロクサーヌ」は1978年の大ヒット曲。したがってこの時代からのファンはもう当然のごとく「ロクサーヌ」を最大のヒット曲！！となるわけです。

スティングにとっての女神「ロクサーヌ」が生まれたのは・・ あるパリ、サンジェルマンの夜・・・かっこいい💛 For Sting, his muse “Roxanne” , even though a prostitute in the song, was born on a certain night in Paris, in Saint-Germain… how cool!

まず「ロクサーヌ」の生誕の土地なのですが・・・場所はフランスです。
First of all, the birthplace of “Roxanne” is in France.

フランスには101の県がありますが、その中のパリ西部郊外にあるイブリーヌ県（Yveliness) にある都市、”サンジェルマン”、
France has 101 départements, and in the Yvelines département,
located in the western suburbs of Paris, there is the city of Saint-Germain.

そこでスティングは、「ポリス」のメンバーとして音楽のお仕事をしていました。
時は1977年。
There, Sting was working as a musician with The Police. The time was 1977.

お仕事場は　”ケチでチンケなミュージックホール〈ナッシュヴィル・クラブ〉”（Sting,　2011 東本貢司訳,2003 p.411）だったそうです。
His workplace was a “cheap, rundown music hall called the Nashville Club” (Sting, 2011, translated by Mitsushi Higashimoto, 2003, p. 411).

ちなみにスティング書いたこの本の英語版では ”the Nashville Club, a seedy velveteen music hall” (Broken Music A memoir, Sting, 2003, P285) と表現しています。

seedy というのは 私の頭では、ちょっと汚くって、あまり品が良くないような感じの言葉ですねえ。velveteenというのはベルベットにみせた安物ということばなので、東本さんの訳うまいですね。
“Seedy, in my mind, suggests something a little dirty and not very refined.
And velveteen refers to a cheap imitation of velvet, so Higashimoto’s translation is excellent.”

そして2晩仕事をしていた「ポリス」が、利用していた宿は、サン＝ラザール駅にある簡易ホテルだったそうです。
And “The Police,” who worked for two nights, stayed at a budget hotel located
at Gare Saint-Lazare.

パリには主要ターミナルが6つありますがそのうちの一つで1日の利用数は2023年現在約28万人と言われており、1837年8月26日開業で、パリのターミナル駅では最も古いものになります。

that is closest to the city center, making it highly convenient.
It is also famous as the railway station painted by the Impressionist painter Monet.

ウジェーヌ・フラシャという建築家が設計した駅で、ガラスと鉄を使った屋根が特徴的で、建設当時の1937年の最先端の素材を使ったデザインでモネだけでなく多くの印象派の画家が描いたという芸術性をただよわせる雰囲気があるところといわれています。ぜひ訪れてみたいところですね。

そんな駅の裏の簡易ホテルに当時の「ポリス」のメンバーは、もちろんスティング宿をとっていました。ホテルの玄関は悪臭が漂う路地に面し、けばけばしい”ネオン”が光るセックスショップが近くにあり、対照的にその両脇が古本屋さんだったといいます。

behind the station. The hotel’s entrance faced an alley filled with bad odors,
with a gaudy neon-lit sexy shop nearby, while on either side were second-hand bookstores, creating a contrasting scene.

そこは路地は坂になっており20名ほどの女性たちが戸口にもたれかかってチェーンスモーキングをしていたそうです。テカテカのレインコートを着込みその下には、ミニスカートに安物のブーツかハイヒール。
The alley was on a slope, with about 20 women leaning against doorways, chain-smoking.
They were wearing shiny raincoats, and underneath, mini-skirts paired with
cheap boots or high heels.

そう、彼女たちがしていたのが、”put-on-the-red-light ”自分自身を娼婦として売り出す”　そして一番売れ行きがよかったのがやや年をとった女性だったそう。💛若い美形の女性よりも人気があったそうです。
Yes, what they were doing was “putting on the red light”—marketing themselves as prostitutes.
It is said that the most successful ones were the slightly older women,
who were more popular than the younger, beautiful ones. 💛

そしてそんな光景が見えるseedy, velveteen なホテルのロビーに、古い「ラ・コメディー・フランセーズ」＝世界で最も古い歴史のあるフランスの国立劇団、のポスターが貼ってあったそうです。
And in the seedy, velveteen lobby of that hotel, there was an old poster from
“La Comédie-Française”—the world’s oldest national theater company from France.

今では伝説のミュージッシャンと言われているスティングですが、まだ当時は若い駆け出しのミュージッシャン。
Now considered a legendary musician, Sting was still a young, up-and-coming musician
at the time.

そして彼の目にとまったのが、そのポスターの色褪せた　”華美”　だったそうです。そのポスターにえがかれていたのが「シラノ・ド・ベルジュラック」という演劇だったといいます。
And what caught his eye was the faded opulence of the poster.
It depicted a play titled “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

そう・・・スティングが見とれたポスターはエドモン・ロスタン作の、1897年当時はフランスで大ヒットし、今でも世界で繰り返し上演されている『シラノ・ド・ベルジュラック』です。
Yes… the poster that captivated Sting was for Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand,
a play that was a big hit in France in 1897 and continues to be performed
around the world today.

主人公は類まれな醜い容姿を持つ多才な男性で、文才があり、また剣術の達人。
そして彼は巨大な鼻を持っていた・・そして母親からでさえも敬遠されていた・・
The protagonist is a talented man with exceptionally unattractive features,
possessing oustanding literary talent and mastery in swordsmanship.
But, he had a extra large nose and was shunned even by his own mother for that.

その主人公が心から愛していたのが・・
And..the one whom the protagonist loved with all his heart was…

その巨大な鼻をもったシラノ・ド・ベルジュラックが恋に落ちたのが”ロクサーヌ”だったのです。
The one Cyrano de Bergerac, with his extra large nose, fell in love with… was Roxanne.

しかしシラノの友達の美青年、クリスチャンも”ロクサーヌ”に思いを寄せていることを知ります。However, Cyrano learns that his friend, the super handsome young Christian,
also has strong feelings for Roxanne.

そして自分の醜さゆえに、シラノは”ロクサーヌ”のために身を引くことを決意します。
なんと、つらいことだったのかと・・涙が出てきちゃいます。
Because of his own ugliness, Cyrano decides to step aside for Roxanne‘s sake.
How heartbreaking that must have been… it brings tears to my eyes.

愛する人と、一つになりたいと人なら思ったはず・・しかし運命と思ったのでしょうか。
シラノは、そのハンサムのクリスチャンの代わりにラブレターを書いてあげます。
Anyone would want to be united with the one they love,
but perhaps Cyrano saw it as fate. Instead,
he writes love letters on behalf of the handsome Christian…oh my gosh!

しかも何度も・・戦場にいた彼の代わりにも・・
Not only did Cyrano write the letters multiple times, but also he also did so in stead of Christian who was at the battlefield.

そして”ロクサーヌ”はその言葉に恋をします。
そしてクリスチャンの中身？に惚れるのです。
つまりその恋文にロクサーヌは惚れこんでしまいます。
And Roxanne falls in love with those words.
She becomes enamored with what she believes is the soul of Christian.
In other words, she falls in love with the letters themselves.

そして、とうとうクリスチャンがロクサーヌと面会を果たして聞いた言葉は・・
”私はクリスチャンが美しくなかったとしても・・その人格を愛している”と告げます。
And when Christian finally meets Roxanne, he hears her say,
“Even if Christian were not beautiful, I would still love his character.”

美青年のクリスチャン・・・この言葉に絶望します。
何度も書いたラブレターの言葉はすべてシラノのものだったからです。
The super handsome Christian is devastated by these words.
All the love letter words he sent were written by Cyrano.

そして戦場にて無謀な突撃を行い、戦死してしまいます。
And on the battlefield, Christian made a reckless charge and lost his life.

彼の心の痛みも・・愛の魔術でしょうか・・涙が出てしまいます・・
ロクサーヌに恋し恋焦がれ・・自分が語ることのできなかった言葉を友に書いてもらった・・
Perhaps it was the magic of love?・・・ which brought such pain to his heart…
It brings tears to my eyes.
Christian longed for Roxanne and yearned for her love,
but he had to rely on his friend to write the words he could not express himself.

愛があれば・・私は、誰の言葉であってもよかったのでは、と思う反面、言葉が語る愛の重さ。
If there is love, I sometimes wonder if it really matters whose words they are,
yet there is a profound weight in the love expressed through words.

愛の大きさ。愛の美しさを、彼は持ち合わせてないと感じたのでしょうか。
つまり、その恋文にかかれた言葉が彼の心には　なかった？
Did he feel that he lacked the depth and beauty of love?
Perhaps the words in the love letters were not in his heart?

これはわかりませんが、それも芸術の１部ですよね・・
Indeed, it’s uncertain, but perhaps that’s part of the art of it all.



絶望感ゆえ？無謀な突撃で命を失ったのはこの物語の彼の運命ととらえるべきなのか・・
彼が選んだものなのか・・愛の魔法。
Was it his fate, driven by despair, to lose his life in a reckless attack in the battlefield?
Or was it a choice he made? Perhaps it was the magic of love.

そしてそのポスターに芸術性を刺激されたのでしょうか。娼婦に思いを寄せたスティング・・創作力のなせる業！ロマンスの主役は・・ Did the artistic inspiration from the poster stir Sting’s imagination? He was drawn to the prostitute, which fueled his creative powers! The romance’s lead role is・・・」

スティングは彼の滞在していた安ホテルの部屋に戻り、
ホテルの窓の下の通りで稼ぎがなく立ちすくむ一人の少女を思い描き、
それにロスタン作の『シラノ・ド・ベルジュラック』の悲しい劇を重ね合わせ、
曲を書き上げました。そしてロマンスの主役として書き上げた,と私は理解しています。
Sting returned to his room in the cheap hotel
where he was staying and imagined a girl standing idle
in the street below his hotel window,
without any earnings. He intertwined this image with the tragic drama
from Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac and composed the song.
He wrote it with her as the lead role in the romance, so I understand

そして、スティングがその少女に名前を付けたのです。
And then, Sting gave the girl a name: “Roxanne.”

こうしてスティングのロクサーヌは生を受けました。
そして彼女はスティングの人生を変えてしまいます。
In this way, Sting’s “Roxanne” was born.
She ended up changing Sting’ｓ life forever.

おまけに当時は、BBCで、娼婦！ということで放送禁止されてしまいました。
再発売でその放送禁止が解除されました。
As a bonus, at the time, the song was banned from being broadcast on the BBC due to its references to prostitution. The ban was lifted when the song was re-released.

時代を感じますね。

スティングがまだ”ポリス”（原名The Police）というバンド時代の曲なのですが、
当時のマネジャーが、バンド創立者のドラム担当のスチュワート・コープランなのですが、
そのお兄さんがポリスのバンドのマネジャーをしていました。
The song “Roxanne” is from Sting’s time with the band “The Police.” The band was founded by drummer Stewart Copeland, and his brother served as the band’s manager.

そしてこの曲を聴いて、これはいける！と確信したマネジャー。
この曲をもってA＆Mレコードに乗り込み、見事契約。
※A＆Mは当時の大西洋両岸で最もせいこうしていた大手レコード会社の一つ。
The manager was convinced of the song’s potential after hearing it
and decided to take it to A&M Records.

As a result, The Police successfully signed a contract with the label,
which was one of the most successful record companies
on both sides of the Atlantic at the time.

この曲をマネジャーのマイルズが聞くまでは、このような大ヒットを狙う大会社のレコード会社でなく、イリーガル・レーベル　(そのマネジャーのレコードレーベルで、A＆Mが大手企業なら、
ちょうど中小企業という感じです。）で何とか独立してレコードを
リリースできればと考えていたポリスがそこにいました。
Before manager Miles heard this song, The Police were considering releasing records independently under an illegal label (which was the manager’s record label and a small-scale operation compared to a major company like A&M Records).

They hoped to manage their releases independently rather than aiming for a big hit with a major record company.

But I am sure that Sting was dreming a super extra big hit,
as well as the other members did, I guess. Just, realistically at that time.
The manager was thinking very realistically as the above.

ちなみに「レーベル」というのは、アーティスト、ミュージッシャンと契約を交わして、CD,　レコードなどの商品を製作する組織のことを言います。
A “label” refers to an organization that signs contracts with artists and musicians to produce products such as CDs and records.

ここにマネジャー、そしてドラム担当のスチュワートのお兄さん、マイルズが言った言葉をご紹介しておきますね。スティングによりますと・・
“Here, let me share with you the words of the manager, who is also Stewart’s brother, Miles, according to Sting.”

”It’s godxxmn classic, it’s a fxxking’ smash.” だそうです。（Broken Music, Sting, 2003, p.２９６）💛ええと・・これを私の頭の中で‥日本語にすると、
「すげー名曲！大ヒットだぜ！」でしょうか…（笑）皆様におまかせします！

※put-on-the-red-light ”自分自身を娼婦として売り出す”　というイディオムです。
ただ、もっと深くこのイディオムを紐解いていくと、”red light”　「赤いライト」、これは売春宿では赤いライトを灯すというとこからきています。もちろんこれは芸術作品なので、作者のスティングはもっとこの言葉を選ぶときに意味したかったことはあるかと思いますが….例えば、この”赤”という色であったり、それで意味することのできる売春宿であったり。

またそういう売春地区を英語で　”Red light discrict（地区）”と呼んだりもします。

日本でも売春通りを「赤線（地帯）」と昔は呼んでいたそうです。もう死語かと思いますが・・・

今のお父さん、お母さん、もしくはおじいちゃん、おばあちゃんになった人もいるかもですが、
この曲を聴くと、自分の青春時代を思い出すことができるということ。
When we talk about feeling the energy of the song, it brings us back to the time when The Police were at their peak. It might resonate with fathers and mothers, or even grandfathers and grandmothers now, reminding them of their own youth when they hear this song.

娼婦という世間一般ではややもすると違法とされ、見下され、

さらに「愛」！　娼婦という仕事を超えた「愛」。
男性たちの中には、レイプをされた女性に対して嫌悪を抱く人もいますし、
なんと日本でも、ある話によると・・日本では買収防止法が昭和31年（1956年）に施行され、
公的には買収はなくなりましたが、京都の高級遊女様方でのお話にでは、
処女は・・・・目が飛び出るくらいのとか・・きいたことがあります。

つまり、まだ非常に多くの男性陣は、性行為に対して何かしらの偏見をもっている・・でも、
それをこえて、ロクサーヌを愛している男性は、愛しているとささやく。女性はキュンときちゃいます。
“In other words, many men still hold some prejudices about sexual acts.
However, beyond that, the man who loves Roxanne whispers his love for her.

そして、そのロクサーヌを愛しいる男性は、君はその仕事が悪いとか良いとか気にしないんだね・・・
といって、その男性が・・「ロクサーヌ」と名前を呼ぶ・・

解放・・自由をあたえようという愛。

ピアノの音はスチュワート・コープランドがスタジオでうっかり
ピアノに座った時に出た音を録音したものです。録音事故？（笑）
The piano sound was recorded when Stewart Copeland accidentally sat
on the piano in the studio. It was an unintended recording mistake (😅).

スティングはこの間違ったピアノの音を気に入ったので、
結果として曲の最初に残すことにしました。
